A Jobcentre office was thrown into panic after a man doused himself in petrol and threatened to set fire to himself.
The shocking incident took place at 4:30pm on Wednesday at Ashton Jobcentre, Ashton-under-Lyne, in Greater Manchester.
It is unknown whether anything led up to the incident, but emergency services were called and the man was taken to Tameside General Hospital.
He is not believed to have suffered any injuries, the Manchester Evening News reports.
Ashton Jobcentre was closed for the afternoon and reopened the following morning as normal.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) said rumours circulating on social media that he had been carrying a gun are not true.
A spokesperson for the DWP said: We are aware of an incident at the Ashton-under-Lyne Jobcentre on Wednesday 9 September.
“It is now a police matter.”
A spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service added: “An ambulance attended and a person was taken to Tameside General Hospital.”
No further details are available at this time.
